Ian McKellen Shares Painful Gay Past in New Short Video

In a new short story film directed by Joe Stephenson, Sir Ian McKellen delivers a powerful insight into his childhood growing up in England.

The film, a piece created for Tate Britain’s Queer British Art exhibit, features actor Scott Chambers as the somber visual for McKellen’s haunting past. McKellen tells how his experience with regret, internal conflicts, oppression, and secrecy turned him into one of the LGBT community’s greatest activists.

Part of the reason I proselytize, talk about being gay, is because I don’t want today’s children not to enjoy their sexuality, be aware of it, think about it, puzzle about it, discuss it, have it out in the open, because of course it’s central to what you are.
